Join the Council

Council members are appointed to 6-year terms. They can serve two terms. After going off the Council, members must wait at least a year before re-applying if they want to be on the Council again.


You can apply to be a Council member if you live in Delaware and are:

  • An adult with a developmental disability.
  • A parent or guardian of a child with a developmental disability.
  • A family member of an adult with a developmental disability who cannot advocate for themselves, or
  • A person who works for a community organization that serves people with developmental disabilities.

To be a Council member, you must:

The Council meets 10 times a year. Council members also serve on committees. We offer the following support to Council members who are people with developmental disabilities or family members if they need it to participate in meetings:

  • Transportation to meetings
  • Child care
  • Support to review and understand materials before and during meetings

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Delaware Developmental Disabilities Council:

  1. Learn more about the Council and our work on this website.
  2. Contact us to learn more about the role and responsibilities, when we will add new members, and whether you are eligible to apply.
  3. Attend a Council meeting to see the Council in action. View DDC's Public Meeting calendar.
  4. Complete a Board and Commissions Application.
